Trends change, and plastic surgery is continually evolving to deliver the aesthetic outcomes patients request. In Dr. Brian Reagan’s experience, this is particularly true in the area of breast augmentation.
Breast augmentation itself remains more popular than ever, but the preferred aesthetic is changing. In the past five to 10 years, Dr. Reagan has seen a shift in requests from his breast augmentation patients. Whereas oversized, obviously augmented breasts were once highly sought-after, more modern women are embracing smaller implants in anatomically correct shapes.
In this post, Dr. Reagan explores some of the reasons for the shift.
From Overtly Sexual to Subtle and Natural
Unnaturally large, fake breasts were made popular in the 90s and early 2000s by celebrities like Pamela Anderson, Victoria Beckham and Heidi Montag. The obviously augmented look was seen by some as a way to reclaim female sexuality. It was also something of a status symbol, announcing to the world that a woman valued her appearance, had the means to afford plastic surgery and was proud to show off the results.
In recent years, however, many women have decided they do not want to project that kind of overt sexuality. Instead of wanting to draw attention to an over-augmented chest, nowadays many women actually prefer that their plastic surgery go unnoticed. As a result, the demand for smaller implants in natural shapes has risen steeply.
Practical Considerations
Lifestyle factors have also tipped the scales toward natural breast augmentation. Many of today’s women lead healthy lifestyles and enjoy high-impact fitness activities, such as spinning, boot camp classes and high-intensity interval training. Large implants that add a lot of weight to the chest are simply not compatible with this type of active lifestyle. Smaller, lighter implants are a more practical choice for today’s active breast augmentation patient.
Changing Fashions
Current fashion trends have followed the shift toward an active, fitness-focused lifestyle. Many women love wearing athletic clothing (termed “athleisure” in the fashion world) made popular by brands like Lululemon and Athleta. Modestly sized implants in natural shapes go hand-in-hand with the sporty, athleisure aesthetic.
