After getting a full night’s sleep, it is frustrating to look in the mirror and notice yourself looking tired. As you age, the skin around your eyes can create a permanently sleepy appearance, which may not correspond with your actual level of energy. Plastic surgeon Dr. Brian Reagan shares some of the cosmetic procedures that target the deep undereye bags and droopy eyelids that can read as tiredness, beginning with some non-surgical options:
Dermal Fillers
Hyaluronic acid-based fillers like Restylane and Juvederm add volume to the face. These injectables can help fill the dark hollows beneath the eyes for a refreshed look that lasts about one year.
Chemical Peel
With a chemical peel, the outer layer of skin can be safely removed to reveal skin with better texture and pigmentation below. The chemical solution also stimulates collagen production, which can gradually improve the appearance of the undereye area.
Laser Skin Resurfacing
While you may be aware that laser skin resurfacing can smooth the skin and treat deeper wrinkles, you might be surprised to discover it can also minimize undereye bags. If your eye bags are primarily the result of skin droopiness, tightening up the skin should help you to look better rested.
IPL Photofacial
For eye bags caused by hyperpigmentation, you may want to try IPL (intense pulsed light). This light treatment usually tackles age spots and damage, but it can also lighten the dark circles that make it look like you have not been sleeping. Fortunately, there is no downtime associated with this procedure.
Lower Eyelid Surgery
If dramatic results are what you’re looking for, surgery will always surpass less-invasive treatments. Lower eyelid surgery (blepharoplasty) is the best option for dealing with undereye bags. Here, Dr. Reagan repositions the fat under the eyes to achieve a fuller, smoother appearance.
Upper Eyelid Surgery
Upper blepharoplasty does not deal with undereye bags, but it does remove the excess skin and fat that cause the upper eyelids to droop. When the eyes do not open fully, they tend to look tired. Without this extra weight, the eyelids have a wider range of motion and appear more rested.
Brow Lift
In a similar manner, brow lift can allow the upper eyelids to open more widely. While the primary objectives of this surgery are to smooth out forehead lines and elevate the arcs of the eyebrows, it has the added benefit of excising extra skin and fat that weigh down the eyelids.
