For many women, breast sagging (referred to by doctors as “ptosis”) is inevitable at some point in life, particularly after pregnancy, breastfeeding or significant weight loss.
One of the misconceptions about breast surgery is that placing saline or silicone breast implants can improve the look of breast sag and create fuller, perkier looking breasts.
Although implants are a great way to enhance the fullness and volume of naturally small breasts, in most cases they do not improve breast sag.
San Diego plastic surgeon Brian Reagan, M.D., F.A.C.S., explains more here.
Breast Implants Rarely Improve Sag
Implants very rarely make saggy or droopy breasts look perky. In fact, in most cases, placing implants in sagging breasts makes the breast sagging worse, particularly when the skin has lost elasticity. The implants “weigh down” the sagging breasts so they droop even further.
In a handful of cases where the skin is still firm and elastic and sagging is minimal, breast implants can fill out the breasts and add a slight lift. But this is extremely rare.
Breast Lift for Youthful, Perky Breasts
If your breasts sag and you wish for perkier, more youthful-looking breasts, the more suitable solution is mastopexy (breast lift surgery). This common surgery is very successful when performed by a qualified, experienced surgeon like Dr. Reagan.
During breast lift, Dr. Reagan removes excess skin and tightens and reshapes the breast tissue higher on the chest. He can also relocate the nipple-areolar complex higher on the breast mound and reduce the size of enlarged, stretched-out areolas.
If you wish your breasts were perkier and bigger, saline or silicone implants can be added to breast lift surgery. After the excess skin is removed and the tissues are tightened, saline or silicone implants can be placed to create shapelier, sexier breasts. You and Dr. Reagan can select the implant size and type most likely to give you the results you want.
